Understanding your mental health — or your child’s — is the first step toward feeling better. Explore Tammy’s patient education resources on common conditions, the care process at Strong Minds PLLC, and what to expect from psychiatric care in Vienna, VA and across Northern Virginia.
Your first visit with Tammy is a thorough clinical conversation — not an interrogation. Here’s what to have ready to make the most of your time.
A psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized graduate-level training in psychiatric and mental health care. PMHNPs like Tammy are licensed to diagnose, evaluate, prescribe psychiatric medications, and provide ongoing psychiatric management. The primary difference from a psychiatrist (MD) is the educational pathway — the clinical scope of practice for psychiatric evaluation and medication management is directly comparable. Tammy also holds dual certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC), giving her an unusually broad whole-health perspective.
Yes. Strong Minds provides psychiatric care for children, adolescents, adults, and families. For pediatric and adolescent patients, Tammy works closely with caregivers throughout the process to ensure coordinated, age-appropriate care. She has particular expertise in adolescent ADHD, anxiety, and depression — and in the specific pressures facing teens in Fairfax County Public Schools and Northern Virginia.
Yes. Telehealth appointments are available for patients located anywhere in Virginia — including across Fairfax County, Northern Virginia, and the broader state. It depends on the clinical picture. Tammy conducts a thorough evaluation before making any prescribing decisions. Some patients begin medication on or shortly after their first visit; others may benefit from additional evaluation, a stepped approach, or a non-medication-first plan. Every care plan is individualized to the patient — there is no one-size-fits-all protocol at Strong Minds.
